^lpt^aCaracterísticas do trabalho policial, assim como seu processo de institucionalização e representação social, constituem aspectos relevantes à investigação da saúde mental de policiais. Produzir evidências e interpretá-las, á luz referenciais teóricos consolidados ou emergentes é um desafio na literatura especializada. O objetivo deste estudo foi sistematizar as tendências teórico-metodológicas nos estudos sobre saúde mental de policiais brasileiros. Foi realizado uma revisão da literatura nas bases de dados Scielo, PePsic, BVS-Psi, Lilacs e PsycINFO (janeiro de 2001 a dezembro de 2017). Foram incluídos estudos: originais, realizados no Brasil, com desfecho principal a saúde mental de policiais civis, militares, federais e guardas municipais em idiomas português e inglês. A análise final foi composta 47 artigos. As ênfases teórico-metodológicas concentram-se em estudos epidemiológicos, psicodinâmicos e baseados na teoria do estresse. A maioria dos estudos relaciona a saúde mental do policial à carga psicológica diária enfrentada nas rotinas de controle e contenção da violência, com repercussões na qualidade dos vínculos profissionais, na percepção de risco, na saúde e na família. Associados a esses aspectos estão os problemas decorrentes das condições de trabalho, que tendem a maximizar dificuldades para o exercício da atividade policial, na precariedade dos equipamentos, restrições à capacitação e os baixos salários. A saúde mental do policial brasileiro é pouco enfatizada em termos preventivos, o que torna relevante e necessário fundamentar políticas e programas nessa direção.^len^aCharacteristics of police work, as well as its process of institutionalization and social representation, are aspects that are relevant to the investigation of the mental health of police officers. Producing evidence and interpreting them in light of consolidated or emerging theoretical references is a challenge in the specialized literature. The objective of this study was to systematize the theoretical-methodological trends in the studies on the mental health of Brazilian police officers. A literature review was carried out on the following databases; Scielo, PePsic, BVS-Psi, Lilacs and PsycINFO (January 2001 to December 2017). Original studies, carried out in Brazil, with a primary outcome of mental health of civil, military, federal police and municipal guards were included in Portuguese and English. The final analysis consisted of 47 articles. The theoretical-methodological emphases are concentrated in epidemiological, psychodynamic, and theory of stress based studies. Most of the studies relate the officer's mental health to their daily psychological load, faced in violence control and containment routines, with repercussions on the quality of the professional bonds, the perception of risk, health and the family. Associated with these aspects are the problems arising from working conditions, which tend to maximize difficulties on the exercise of police activity, the precariousness of equipment, restrictions on training, and low wages. The mental health of the Brazilian police officer is rarely emphasized as a means of prevention, which makes it relevant and necessary to base policies and programs in this direction.
