RIBEIRO-GONCALVES, José Alberto; COSTA, Pedro Alexandre    LEAL, Isabel. Hope and proximal and distal support in older portuguese sexual minority men. []. , 21, 1, pp.75-81. ISSN 1645-0086.  https://doi.org/10.15309/20psd210112.

The aim of this study was to evaluate how the indicators of support, LGBT community connectedness, social support and relationship satisfaction, predict the levels of hope in the Portuguese gay and bisexual older adults, using the Minority Stress Model. Method: A cross-sectional study was performed using questionnaires in digital format; 110 Portuguese gay and bisexual older adults (mean age = 63.5 years) completed the Portuguese versions of the Dyadic Adjustment Review Scale, LGBT Community Connectedness Scale and Herth's Hope Scale. Results: A structural equation model was developed. Age was not a predictor of hope levels; relationship satisfaction was the main predictor of hope. Higher levels of relationship satisfaction, social support and LGBT community connectedness were significant predictors of hope. Hope is an important positive variable in managing the stigma of the social context. Discussion: These findings are important to underpin future health and psychosocial interventions in minority older adults, while reducing the acute shortage of research in this area.
