Burnout is an old and well-known problem in the health professions. The COVID-19 pandemic has put pressure on health services and their professionals, creating extreme conditions that have led to an increased workload in an environment conditioned by fear, anxiety and uncertainty. Review articles and meta-analyses published in biomedical literature during one year, between May 2021 and May 2022, that referred to burnout in health professionals during the course of the pandemic was analysed. The results indicate that burnout has increased very significantly as well as the mental health problems associated with it. The groups and risk factors were identified, as well as the forms of intervention available to mitigate the impact of a pandemic. Health policies and interventions specifically aimed at these professionals should be taken in similar situations in the future.
