^lpt^aEste estudo, dividido em quatro partes, detém-se inicialmente no simbolismo inerente à eleição do primeiro Presidente afro-americano, um sinal da vitalidade democrática dos Estados Unidos e da notável capacidade do seu sistema político e constitucional para acolher transformações sociais, filosóficas e ideológicas. Segue-se uma apreciação da candidatura de Obama, que conseguiu conjugar estratégias modernas e uma mensagem enraizada na tradição política americana clássica. Num terceiro momento, analisaremos as eventuais implicações do triunfo de Obama na dinâmica eleitoral norte-americana, concluindo este artigo com um breve levantamento dos principais desafios que a sua Administração enfrenta, em particular na política interna.^len^aThis paper, which is divided in four parts, starts by considering the symbolism inherent to the election of the first Afro-American President, a sign of the democratic vitality of the United States and of the exceptionable capacity of its political and constitutional system to welcome social, philosophical and ideological transformations. We will then consider Obama’s candidacy, which was able to reconcile modern strategies and a message rooted in the classical American political tradition. The third chapter includes an analysis of the potential implications of Obama’s triumph in the American electoral dynamics, followed by a conclusion where we briefly describe the main challenges that his Administration will meet, especially in domestic politics.
