^lpt^aO presente artigo tem dois objetivos. Em primeiro lugar, o argumento elucida as funções que a teoria pode desempenhar. Neste contexto, o artigo distingue três propósitos fundamentais da teoria: o de análise da realidade; o de constituição da realidade; e o de prática política. Estes três propósitos, relacionados entre si, constituem três níveis de intervenção da teoria. Em segundo lugar, e partindo deste reconhecimento, o artigo questiona-se acerca do lugar dos «teoristas» face ao mundo empírico. O argumento inspira -se na «viragem crítica», no estudo da política internacional mas, ao mesmo tempo, recusa o encerramento da crítica em fórmulas e etiquetas, defendendo uma atuação teórica assente na identificação de vulnerabilidades sociais e num esforço de transformação política.^len^aThe present article has two objetives. Firstly, it reflects upon the functions of theory. Here, the article differentiates three fundamental purposes of theory: the analysis of reality; the constitution of reality; and political practice. These three purposes - which are interconnected - provide three levels of theoretical intervention. Secondly, and drawing on these three levels, the article reflects on the place of “theorists” vis à vis the empirical world. Here, the article draws inspiration on the critical turn, but at the same time refuses the foreclosing of critique in formulas and labels. Instead, it makes the case for a theoretical intervention aimed at identifying social vulnerabilities and contributing to political transformation.
