^lpt^aO foco deste artigo é a implicação normativa que as teorias das relações internacionais têm sobre a realidade. Objetiva-se fazer inferências sobre os impactos que essas teorias poderiam ter sobre o comportamento de estados. Em primeiro lugar, expõe-se a clivagem entre dois conjuntos de teorias. Algumas concebem a possibilidade de que um conjunto de estados renuncie ao uso da violência entre si. Outras perspetivas consideram que a própria essência das relações internacionais é o estado de guerra de todos contra todos, o que torna a paz perpétua inalcançável. Em segundo lugar, apresentam-se as diferenças analíticas e prescritivas entre as teorias que concebem possibilidades de paz.^len^aThis article focuses on the normative implications international relations theories have on reality. The objective is to produce inferences about the impacts these theories could provoke on states’ behavior. Firstly, this article shows the divide between two set of theories. Some conceive the possibility that a group of states renounces the use of violence among each other. Other perspective considers that the very essence of international relations is the state of war amongst everyone, which makes perpetual peace unachievable. Secondly, this study presents the analytical and prescriptive differences between the theories that reckon the possibility of peace.
