^lpt^aO artigo começa por apresentar os fatores que facilitaram a centralidade dos Estados Unidos durante a Guerra Fria e a influência da globalização nesses fatores, destacando o papel-chave das relações económicas, financeiras e estratégicas dos Estados Unidos com a Ásia-Pacífico entendidas como a base da globalização. Tendo em conta a crise financeira internacional de 2008, que precipitou um ajustamento naquela relação, analisam-se os fatores internos da China que podem favorecer a atuação chinesa naquela área e, por fim, os objetivos intermédios e operacionais caso a China queira no futuro disputar com os Estados Unidos o papel de «Império do Meio».^len^aThe present paper begins by presenting the factors that facilitated the centrality of the United States during the Cold war and the influence of globalization on those factors, with an emphasis on the key role of the economic, financial and strategic relations between the US and the Asia-Pacific as the basis of globalization. In the light of the 2008 international financial crisis, the paper carries out an analysis of the internal factors that might favour China’s action in that area and, lastly, the intermediate and operational goals should China wish, in the future, to challenge the US’ role as the “Middle Empire”.
