CASTANO, David. Socialism, Democracy and Europe. Transition and European integration: The Portuguese Case. []. , 48, pp.09-24. ISSN 1645-9199.

The role of Europe in the Portuguese democratization process has been essentially analyzed by political science, following the line of research developed by “transitology” that drew attention to the importance of the international context. Among the aspects emphasized by this literature stood out the idea that the role of the EEC is particularly relevant in the democratic consolidation phase. Geoffrey Pridham argued, however, that we should not neglect the influence of European integration on democratic transition processes. Through a historical approach, this article will follow this line, analyzing the evolution of the Portuguese Socialists in relation to the process of European integration and the role of the EEC during the Portuguese democratic transition.
