VALENTE, Isabel. Concerning the 30 years of the Portuguese accession to EEC. []. , 48, pp.46-59. ISSN 1645-9199.

With the accession of Portugal and Spain to the European Communities, during the 1980s, a new geopolitical dimension was added to the process of European integration. The European Community thus acquired a privileged position at the Atlantic, through the integration of the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira, and the Autonomous Com- munity of the Canaries (all standing at the crossroads between the European, American and African continents). This article proposes a reflection about the importance of the Atlantic outer- most regions within the framework of the European Union, highlighting their role as furthermost frontiers of the European project. More specifically, the history of the process of integration of the Portuguese outermost regions will be also sketched.
