^lpt^aO artigo visa apreender, ainda que de forma breve, os contornos do estatuto de que em Portugal gozam, no quadro da ação externa do Estado (e também das relações externas da defesa), os diversos órgãos de soberania. Tal avaliação pressupõe uma indagação no plano da estática jurídico-constitucional mas requer, ao mesmo tempo, a compreensão da evolução que quarenta anos de prática política têm permitido. Referência especial merece, ainda, o desafio específico que o princípio da separação de poderes enfrenta hoje, por força das dinâmicas próprias induzidas pela integração na União Europeia.^len^aThe article aims to capture, albeit briefly, the statute of the Portuguese sovereign institutions in the context of the external action of the state. Such an assessment requires an inquiry into the legal and constitutional dimension but entails at the same time, an understanding of the evolution that forty years of political practice have allowed. Special mention should also be made to the specific challenge that the principle of separation of powers is facing today, by virtue of their own dynamics induced by integration into the European Union.
