MENDES, Pedro Emanuel. The main theories of International Relations: an assessment of the progress of the discipline. []. , 61, pp.95-122. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2019.61a08.

This article takes stock of the theoretical progress of the discipline of International Relations (IR). It identifies six main theories in IR, presenting a synthesis of its main assumptions and theoretical advances. Finally, it develops a discussion about the importance of theory in the present post-paradigmatic moment of the IR discipline. The article defends two key arguments. First, while IR discipline is experiencing a moment of theoretical maturity characterized by the abandonment of major debates and the quest for paradigmatic primacy, it is not the end of theory. Second, despite the emergence of a theoretical spring, it is necessary for IR discipline, and its theories, to have more connection, relevance, and impact on diplomatic practice and political decision making.

: theories of IR; role of theories; practical relevance; IR discipline.
