This essay aims to present an overview of the main theories of European integration, seeking to discuss the explanatory potential of each one of them for a better understanding of the European Union. The relevance of the role of the State is therefore central to the discussion, since the classic theses, marked by the federalists, functionalists, and intergovernmentalism, to the more recent, such as constructivism, while the explanatory model of processes of change and social policy. The text makes a brief reflection on the theoretical contributions of the integration, including a reflection in the fields of security and defense.
