The way each addict lives in day to day life, is something that should be particularly perceived by caregivers because they will be better prepared to care for. Sometimes the prior construction by the health technicians that drug users have poor quality of life and poor mental health can removes them from their perception of the other goals. Therefore, we must revisit these subjective concepts and evaluate how each one perceived and self assess their status in determining time. We analyzed the relationship between quality of life and mental health perception, in a systematic random sample of 180 opiate addicts, integrated into a methadone maintenance program and accepted to answer formulated question from two instruments. We use a tool that allows us to evaluate the quality of life self perception - Quality of life evaluation in drug addicts in methadone substitution program scale (Pacheco, Murcho, & Jesus, 2005) and the mental health assessment - MHI-5 (Mental Health Inventory 5) (J Ribeiro, 2001). It is a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational cross-sectional study. The mostly population male (n = 132, 73.3%), with a mean age of 41.06 (SD = 7.58), in terms of education 31 (17.2%) had more than 9 years, employment status 55 (30.6%) were employed, 128 (71.1%) maintain drug consumption and 153 (85%) have some type of comorbidities. The Quality of life result was Md = 67 (P58-73) the equivalent to 76.8% on a scale with a range of 21-84 and Mental Health was Md = 19 (P15,2 -23) equivalent to 53.52% on a scale with a range of 5-30. Using the Spearman test a moderately positive significant correlation was obtained (r = 342, p <0.001). We conclude that this drug addict population has quality of life and mental health positive values and those who have a better quality of life perception have better mental health.
