COSTA, Liliana; MATOS, Ana Paula    COSTA, José Joaquim. Social Media Disorder Scale - Short Form (SMDS-SF): Study of some psychometric properties in young Portuguese adults. []. , spe6, pp.65-70. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.0215.

BACKGROUND: The Social Media Disorder Scale - Short Form (SMDS-SF)(Eijnden, Lemmens & Valkenburg, 2016) is an instrument developed to assess the dependence of virtual social networks on adolescents. AIM: The objective of this study was to adapt the SMDS-SF to the young Portuguese adults and to study some psychometric properties, namely the factorial structure. METHODS: Participants were 131 individuals between the ages of 20 and 30 who used social networks. RESULTS: An Exploratory Factor Analysis (AFE) revealed a unifatorial structure for SDMS-SF, similar to the original. Cronbach's alpha values (α=.87) and item-total correlations were adequate. No statistically significant differences were found between genders in the symptoms of social network dependence. Subjects who have shown dependence have demonstrated that they use virtual social networks as a way of escaping from negative thoughts, denying the existence of conflicts or family and / or interpersonal problems due to excessive and compulsive use of social networks. CONCLUSIONS: The present study revealed that SMDS-SF is a measure suitable for future research about the dependence of virtual social networks on young adults.
