Small islands are vulnerable systems due to their specific socio-economic and natural characteristics. Simultaneously, these features contribute to a natural heritage with a high level of endemism and the development of unique cultural landscapes. In this context, the creation of protected areas has proven to be an appropriate measure for nature conservation and cultural heritage management. However, constraints resulting from protection regimes tend to create conflicts, especially when the local economic basis is affected. On small islands, these conflicts may escalate due to the increasing competition for limited space and resources. The article discusses the territorial conflicts related to protected areas in such contexts, taking Pico Island (Azores, Portugal) as a case study.
