Tourism is an important element to many cities’ economies and identities. This research was aimed at understanding, through tourist appraisals, which are the most common emotional experiences they encounter in their favourite cities, and which elements that can evoke these experiences. Appraisal Theory was the evaluation model adopted in this research. It indicates that the emotions people experience in a certain place are results of how they evaluate (appraise) information about the environment. The research has a quantitative basis, and 310 people took part in the study. Results have shown that there are five types of emotional experiences that shape a person’s preference for a city: altruism/solidarity, fun, joy, bond with the territory and expectation disconfirmation. According to these results, each kind of experience can be evoked by specific stimuli.
