^lpt^aEstudos de qualidade ambiental são fundamentais para o entendimento da dinâmica ambiental das cidades, sendo a vegetação um dos principais indicadores de qualidade. Porém, a vegetação urbana vem sendo considerada nesses estudos apenas segundo a perspectiva horizontal, ou seja, com a espacialização da cobertura vegetal capturada por meio de sensores remotos, ficando em segundo plano a estrutura vertical da vegetação. A pesquisa teve por objetivo apresentar e discutir essas questões, verificando a necessidade de se incluir a análise da vegetação vertical, ou seja, aquela vista pelo pedestre, nos estudos de qualidade ambiental urbana. Foram confrontados o Índice de Cobertura Vegetal (ICV) e o Índice Visual de Verde (IVV) de quatro localidades e os resultados apontaram para a necessidade de se considerar também o IVV na elaboração da Carta de Qualidade Ambiental Urbana.^len^aStudies of environmental quality are fundamental for the understanding of the environmental dynamics of cities, and vegetation is one of the main indicators of quality. Nevertheless, in many studies urban vegetation is often considered regarding its horizontal perspective, i.e., with the spatialization of vegetal cover captured by means of remote sensors, while the vertical structure of vegetation is often overlooked. This research aims to present and discuss this condition, investigating the need for analysis of vertical vegetation (that viewed by pedestrians) in the studies of urban environmental quality. We compared Vegetal Cover Index with Green View Index of four places and the results indicated the necessity of considering also the Green View Index to elaborate the Urban Environmental Quality Chart.
