This paper promotes an analysis of the main settlements of the territory that corresponds to the present Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA) in 1940. The water supply conditions, as well as the sanitation and health, crops and food for sixteen main settlements are analysed. This study aims to develop a detailed visual characterization of the elements related to agriculture (land use) and water uses (equipments and infrastructures). This characterization of agriculture and water fluxes aims to facilitate the visual perception of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area urban metabolism, as pretended by the research project MEMO. The proposed visual characterization results from the actualization of a methodology previously proposed by MEMO project, for the same territory under analysis in 1900. This methodological actualization results from the introduction of an articulation between qualitative characterization and visual characterization. It should be of particular interest the study of the relation between water use, crops and territory structure, allowed by the crossing of distinct sources, including cartography and enquires of rural hygiene, water and sewers, elaborated in the period of time under analysis.
