Taking into account ways of listening to speech memories from an elderly group, which are residents in a slum of Santa Teresa´s quarter, in Rio de Janeiro, a Brazilian city, as well as, getting to know what the scientific literature describes about favelas, it is possible to get an idea of how strong social prejudices are and the discriminatory treatment given to their residents. The term currently used as ‘favelado’ (squatter) contained strong pejorative connotation. Later, some of these territories have been being controlled by drug trafficking gangs and their residents, indiscriminately, even today, are seen as criminals. Because of that, these people suffer constant abuse by police. Nowadays, there are installing Pacifying Police Units (UPP) in slums, taking back the territorialized control under local drug trafficking domain, public and private actors, many essential services arrive and begin, social, sporting and cultural. This article aims to discuss the changes that the slums in general have been going over the years, and specifically how they affect the identity of this group of seniors, a process that may be glimpsed through their narratives.
