GOMES, Ana Rita    SANTOS, Luciano. Prevalence of complications of diabetes mellitus in patients in the Santo Tirso/Trofa Group of Health Centres: a descriptive study. []. , 33, 4, pp.252-260. ISSN 2182-5173.

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of complications of diabetes in patients treated in the Santo Tirso/Trofa Group of Health Centers. Study type: A cross-sectional study. Setting: Santo Tirso/Trofa Group of Health Centers. Participants: Type 1 and 2 diabetic patients. Methods: A sample of the type 1 and 2 diabetic patients was randomly selected from the population registered in the health units of the Group of Health Centers in December of 2014 (N=9,426). Data were collected from electronic medical records of the patients selected. The following complications were studied: coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, nephropathy, neuropathy, amputation of the lower limb and retinopathy. Data analysis was performed using SPSS® 21 and Excel® 2010 software. Results: Of the 1,507 diabetics studied, 95.5% were type 2, 50.7% were male and the average age was 65.7±12 years. Complications were identified in 33.6% of diabetics. Nephropathy had the highest prevalence (17.2%) and amputation (0.9%) the lowest prevalence. Type 1 diabetics had a significantly higher prevalence of nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy and amputation. Conclusions: The prevalence of some complications found in this study was different from that found in other studies. Interpretation of these discrepancies requires care, given the possible differences between the criteria used for the diagnosis of complications. This study has characterized this problem at local level. The results obtained may be useful for future study of complications of diabetes
