A rua ainda é morada de muita gente. A questão esquecida e poucas vezes colocada é o porquê. Concluímos prontamente que são pessoas em condições precárias e associamos a rua à pobreza. Mas esquecemo-nos frequentemente de uma questão fundamental: a saúde mental. Enquanto internos de medicina geral e familiar, a estagiar na Clínica 3 - Serviço de Psiquiatria Geral e Transcultural do Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa (CHPL), tivemos oportunidade de contactar com esta realidade, acompanhando a equipa liderada pelo Dr. António Bento. Com esta experiência concluímos que este é um problema que também está nas nossas mãos. No entanto, para prevenir e atuar é necessário conhecer a realidade e, acima de tudo, perceber que a questão dos sem-abrigo é muitas vezes mais que uma problemática social, sendo também uma questão de patologia psiquiátrica.

The street is still home to many people. The forgotten and rarely asked question is why. We readily conclude that they are people in precarious conditions, and we associate the street with poverty. But we often forget a fundamental issue, mental health. As residents of general and family medicine, during our internship at Clínica 3 - Serviço de Psiquiatria Geral e Transcultural of the Centro Hospitalar Psiquiátrico de Lisboa (CHPL), we had the opportunity to observe this reality more closely, accompanying the team led by Dr. António Bento. With this experience we conclude that this is a problem that is also in our hands. However, to prevent and act it is necessary to know the reality and, above all, to realize that the issue of homelessness is often more than a social problem, being also a matter of psychiatric pathology.
