^lpt^aObjectivos: A obesidade em idade pediátrica é um problema de saúde que afecta cada vez mais crianças em todo o mundo. As consequências desta problemática na saúde das crianças e dos jovens e, em última instância, na saúde das sociedades, não podem ser ignoradas, sendo, por isso, fundamental a identificação de estratégias de prevenção eficazes. Para esse fim, este artigo apresenta uma revisão de alguma da bibliografia mais actual existente sobre o impacto que o aleitamento materno poderá ter na prevenção da obesidade em idade pediátrica. Metodologia: Foram identificados trabalhos que investigassem os efeitos do aleitamento materno no crescimento e no estado nutricional de crianças e jovens em idade pediátrica (entre os 0-21 anos). Foram utilizados os motores de busca Pubmed e Scirus entre Outubro de 2011 e Agosto de 2012. Os artigos foram revistos de acordo com os critérios de inclusão, tendo sido seleccionados 27. Conclusões: Com esta revisão foi possível concluir que este tema ainda não reúne consenso, havendo algumas hipóteses epigenéticas que defendem que o aleitamento materno tem um papel importante na prevenção do excesso de adiposidade. Por outro lado, existem trabalhos que propõem que a leitura desta correlação é várias vezes dificultada pela existência de muitas variáveis que podem confundir os resultados por serem difíceis de controlar e incluir em todos os estudos.^len^aObjectives: Childhood obesity is a health problem that affects a growing number of children around the world. The consequences of obesity in children’s health and in the general health status of the population cannot be ignored, making it incredibly important to identify effective prevention strategies. Therefore, this article aimed to study the role of breastfeeding in preventing childhood obesity through some of the most recent literature about this issue. Methodology: Several research papers and meta-analysis that studied the effects of breastfeeding on the growth and the nutritional status of youngsters (0 to 21 years old) were identified through electronic databases Pubmed and Scirus from October 2011 to August 2012. Twenty-seven papers met the inclusion criteria. Conclusions: It was possible to conclude that there are still no universal guidelines regarding the prevention of childhood obesity through breastfeeding. On the one hand, some studies suggest metabolic imprinting can occur in infants who are breastfed and protect them against excess adiposity later in life. On the other hand, some studies conclude this correlation loses significance in face of confounding variables.
