CARREIRA, Adélia Maria Caldas. Lisbon urban evolution before 1755: enlargement of streets. []. , ser2, 1, pp.6-18. ISSN 2183-2176.

Lisbon went through important urban transformations during Pedro II, João V and the beginning of José I reigns, abruptly interrupted by the1755 Great Earthquake. Most of these interventions were due to the royal initiative and, in less extension, to the Municipal Senate and private initiative. They consisted essentially by opening of peripheral roads and, within the city, in the extension, regularization and paving of several streets. Communications between the capital and its surroundings areas were improved, as well as the quality of the air.

: Traffic; Peripheral roads; Street regularization and paving; Expropriations; Urban sanitation.
