BUGALHAO, Jacinta    TEIXEIRA, André. The sewers of downtown Lisbon in the 16th century: an archaeological approach. []. , ser2, 4, pp.89-122. ISSN 2183-3176.

During the sixteenth century, Lisbon was deeply transformed. Among other aspects, such transformation included a new location of the political, economical and social offices from the city center to the downtown area by the Tagus River. As a consequence, there was a main reorganization and rethinking of Lisbon's urbanism, and the arrangement of the sanitation system. The aim of this paper is to describe the sixteenth century Lisbon's downtown sanitation network system based on the information collected from the historical written sources, as well as the results from numerous archaeological excavations.
