^lpt^aSe uns imaginam que a sociedade em geral e o sistema político mudaram radicalmente com o triunfo da revolução (1820), outros preferem olhar para o liberalismo como uma regeneração do passado e outros, ainda, optam por realçar as continuidades entre o Antigo Regime e o Liberalismo. O presente trabalho resulta dos pressentimentos destas leituras e procura, tanto quanto possível, no âmbito das evidências sugeridas pelos orçamentos e relação dos empregados públicos (1866) e do que se sabe sobre o final do Antigo Regime, contribuir para (des) associar a natureza e o governo do Estado de Polícia, da segunda metade do século XVIII, ao resultado das práticas políticas e sociais do Estado Liberal, cerca de cinco décadas após a instauração da monarquia constitucional (1866).^len^aIf some imagine that society and the political system have radically changed with the triumph of the 1820 revolution, others see liberalism as a regeneration of the past while others still opt for evidencing the continuity between the Ancien Régime and Liberalism. This paper derives from those readings and aims to contribute to (dis)associating the nature and governance of the Police State in the second half of the 19th century with the result of the political and social practices of the Liberal State, five decades after the constitutional monarchy was implemented (1866). Our work will be based on the evidences suggested by the budgets and the list of public servants (1866) and what we know about the end of the Ancien Régime.
