The paper critically addresses the public policies with a key role in the transition of the food system towards sustainability with reference to the Portuguese case. The research question is the following: What are the key public policies in the transition of the Portuguese food system towards sustainability? After referencing some of the central debates and concepts of the transition of the food system, European and national public policies with a big impact in the transition of the food system to sustainability will be identified. The European Green Deal is the starting point. The other policies correspond to the Common Agricultural and Rural Development Policy, the Territorial Cohesion Policy, the Spatial Planning Policy and the Public Procurement Policy. The importance of the territorial dimension and the need for greater policy integration and coherence towards the food system shift are the main conclusions of the research presented.
