A adesão de Portugal e Espanha às Comunidades Europeias, na década de 80, trouxe uma nova dimensão geopolítica ao processo de construção europeia. A Europa Comunitária adquire, deste modo, uma presença privilegiada no Atlântico por intermédio das Regiões Autónomas dos Açores e da Madeira e da Comunidade Autonómica das Canárias. Neste artigo, propomo-nos trazer à reflexão a importância das estratégias da Comissão Europeia para com estas Regiões mais propriamente através da evolução epistemológica de região-problema a região-oportunidade.

The accession of Portugal and Spain to the European Communities in the 1980s brought a new geopolitical dimension to the process of European integration. The European Community thus acquired a privileged presence in the Atlantic through the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira and the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. In this article, we propose to reflect on the importance of the strategies of the European Commission towards these Regions, more precisely through the epistemological evolution from problem-region to opportunity-region.
