CARDOSO, Gustavo et al. Open Access policies: scientific res publica or self-management?. Sociologia, Problemas e Práticas [online]. 2009, n.60, pp.53-67. ISSN 0873-6529.
In this article, the authors suggest that the analysis of Open Access publications should be regarded not only from the merely technical point of view of a new model of academic publication. Open Access should be analysed as a social movement that is the product of cultural, technical and scientific evolution over the last thirty years. It is important to discuss Open Access policies because the implications of their adoption by the scientific community are not limited to it. Open Access publication can influence the whole scientific production process, from research to publication, not to mention education models themselves and the way in which we regard the media in terms of using the information. The question asked here, but not answered in full, is whether the political economy of Open Access will result in the creation of a scientific res publica, in that it goes beyond the research community and influences society as a whole, or whether it will be another tool that, although it is a product of a social movement, will only be appropriated in individual management of scientific practice within this peer community.
