RODRIGUES, Angela et al. Sun-protection amongst portuguese children and adolescents: a cross-sectional study. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2014, vol.15, n.3, pp.828-841. ISSN 1645-0086. https://doi.org/10.15309/14psd150321.
The negative effects of sun exposure on health have increased in the past decades. For this reason, sun-protection promotion is becoming crucial, especially amongst children and adolescents since they have been described as at-risk populations. This study assessed 810 youth aged 10-16 years old and aimed to describe beliefs and behaviours related to sun-protection, as well as explore gender and age differences. Results showed that on the whole participants had good knowledge and sun protection practices. However, males presented less knowledge and sun-protection behaviours than females. Although younger participants showed less knowledge, they reported better sun-protection practices than older participants. This study highlights the importance of tackling these gender and age differences in future sun-protection promotion strategies in order to improve the efficacy and relevance of these interventions.
