ABREU, Maria Odília e DIAS, Isabel Simões. Physical exercise, mental health and quality of life in ESECS/IPL. Psic., Saúde & Doenças [online]. 2017, vol.18, n.2, pp.512-526. ISSN 1645-0086. https://doi.org/10.15309/17psd180219.
The World Health Organization recognizes physical activity as a health (WHO, 2011) and quality of life promoting behavior. This quantitative work aims to present the preliminary findings resulting from the application of the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-3), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-BREF) to the staff and 2nd Cycle Higher Education students from School of Education and Social Sciences/Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (ESECS/IPL- Portugal) in the academic year 2014/2015. This article describes the sample, regarding sociodemographic variables, motivation for physical exercise, psychopathological symptoms indicators and perception of quality of life. The results indicate that the 140 respondents show a motivation to physical exercise which falls mostly on the category identified regulation (Deci & Ryan, 1985), presenting a profile in the BSI subscales similar to the general population (Canavarro, 2007) and they have a satisfactory or good perception of their quality of life. These results will allow us to understand how these three variables relate to each other, in this specific context.
