MESQUITA, Maria Manuel; SILVA, Clara e FERREIRA, Abílio. Addison disease and pregnancy. Arq Med [online]. 2005, vol.19, n.1-2, pp.35-37. ISSN 2183-2447.
Addison disease is a rare disease, affecting about 1 in 12.000 pregnancies. With the advent of cortisone, pregnancy has become more common in women with Addison disease, because adrenal cortex hypofunction reduces fertility. The authors evaluate the pregnancies occurring in women with Addison disease previously diagnosed to pregnancy. A retrospective study was performed between 1993 and 2005, in a group of 4 pregnant women admitted to our department, with Addison disease previously diagnosed to pregnancy. Four cases are described in detail, based on their written clinical data. The pregnancies were uneventful, except for one case. Our series shows us that if adequate steroid replacement therapy is provided, there is little risk during pregnancy.
