FIGUEIREDO, Mafalda; MATEUS, Vera; OSORIO, Ana e MARTINS, Carla. A contribuição da sensibilidade materna e paterna para o desenvolvimento cognitivo de crianças em idade pré-escolar. Aná. Psicológica [online]. 2014, vol.32, n.2, pp.231-242. ISSN 0870-8231. https://doi.org/10.14417/ap.842.
Maternal sensitivity during mother-child interaction is associated with better preschoolers’ cognitive development. However, the role of father’s sensitivity has been less studied. Seventy children (39 males, 55.7%) were assessed at 4½ years of age, in independent sessions with their mother and their father, in a free play interaction. Although no difference was found between mother’s and father’s sensitivity during the interactions, only the former became a significant predictor of preschoolers’ better cognitive development. The results are discussed taking into account specificities of mother- child and father-child interaction and its effect on children’s cognitive development.
