SILVA, Goreti et al. Determinants of Hydration Status in Portuguese Children. Acta Port Nutr [online]. 2017, n.10, pp.12-16. ISSN 2183-5985. https://doi.org/10.21011/apn.2017.1003.
Introduction: The literature regarding the relationship between hydration status and their potential determinants in children is scarce. Objectives: To evaluate the hydration status in a sample of portuguese children and quantify the association between hydration status weight status and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors. Methodology: A cross-sectional study conducted between January and June 2014, included 348 school children (187 boys), between 7-12 years. To evaluate hydration status, a 24 h urine sample was collected and the urinary markers were quantified, in order to estimate the Free Water Reserve: positive Free Water Reserve values were considered hypohydrated or risk of hypohydration. The sociodemographic and lifestyle data (time spent on computer/TV, sleeping and physical activity) were collected through a questionnaire applied to the parents. Results: Of the total sample, 9.2% of the children were classified as hypohydrated or at risk of hypohydration. Of these, 62.5% were males, mostly overweight / obese with parents overweight / obese. Of the total ehydrated, 52.8% are boys. Walking ≥30 minutes and be son of a <40 years old parents, in girls, was negatively associated with hydration status. The number of hours spent on computer/electronic games, TV/video, sleeping and physical activity was not significantly associated with the status hydration. Conclusions: Although most of the children studied were classified as euhydrated, water intake in boys with overweight / obesity or with parents with overweight / obesity should be particularly stimulated.
