Psychosocial impact and quality of life of age-related macular degeneration
Abstract: Age-related macular degeneration is a major public health problem, which has significant deleterious consequences, given that it causes decreased visual acuity and loss of central vision. This disease is becoming increasingly common among people over 50 years old. Age-related macular degeneration has serious economic consequences, but it is also associated with a significant psychosocial impact and with an important decrement in quality of life of the patient and his/her family. In the present paper we intend to proceed to a literature review related to psychosocial variables implied in diagnostic and treatment of age-related macular degeneration, patients’ quality of life, independence and rehabilitation.
Key words: Age-related macular degeneration, Psychosocial impact, Quality of life.
