It is a feature of the social and occupational landscape of the major retail distribution outlets that most workers are female. This article considers this state of affairs, and analyses the particular case of checkout operators in a large hypermarket in Lisbon, with a view to painting a picture of the world in which these women work and their social and family backgrounds.
