Abstract

NEMIROVSKY, Ada Svetlitza de  and  GONZALEZ, Rosana. Portuguese horticultural producers in the metropolitan region of Buenos Aires. Anál. Social [online]. 2005, n.175, pp.297-318. ISSN 0003-2573.

This article analyses the social and economic integration of the Portuguese in the horticultural producing area of La Matanza, one of the metropolitan districts of Argentina. Migrants from the North of Portugal came to Argentina between the 1940s and the 1960s, at a time when the district was undergoing profound change. Against the contextual backdrop of the Portuguese community as a whole, this article looks at the strategies for reconstructing identity within the community, and at the same time provides a description of the so-called "quintas portuguesas" (Portuguese farms), viewed as a hybrid production system which blends the old with the new. The role of Portuguese immigrants in developing and expanding horticultural production is also highlighted.

Keywords : Comunidades Portuguesas; Fluxos Migratórios; Argentina; Imigrantes Portugueses; Emigrantes Portugueses.
