The aim of this article is to show and discuss the results of research work on the development of literacy and the growth of formal schooling in Portugal during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and to tie them in with trends in some of the main indicators of modernity, in particular those relating to economic development and modern forms of achieving political legitimacy.
