One of the greatest risks facing modern society is the «ethnicization» of social relations. This article uses the French example to examine the role of school in aggravating ethnic segregation and making violence an everyday affair. In giving an account of the failure of the republican model, this article seeks to provide an outline of a school for modernity, fit to take on a political and moral assignment: that of educating the citizens of a pluralist world.
