The purpose of this article is to open up a discussion on the debate over racial theories in Brazil at the beginning of the twentieth century by contrasting Gilberto Freyres interpretation of the Brazilian way of playing football (which is Dyonisiac) with the European way (which is Apollinean), using Freyres own writings on this sport.
