Abstract
RIBEIRO, Luiz césar de Queiroz; SALATA, André; COSTA, Lygia and RIBEIRO, Marcelo Gomes. Digital inequalities: Internet access and use, social-economic position, and spatial segmentation in the Brazilian metropolitan areas. Anál. Social [online]. 2013, n.207, pp.288-320. ISSN 0003-2573.
Much has been written and discussed about the democratizing nature of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which might promote a broader social, political, and economic participation. Our goal in this paper is to evaluate if the spread, in the Brazilian metropolitan areas, of access to the opportunities opened by the Internet is con-ditioned by the country’s historical and social inequalities - in terms of income and education - and also by the spatial segmentation. By means of logit and multinomial logit models we analyze data from the years 2001, 2008, and 2009 to provide answers to these questions.
Keywords : internet; inequalities; opportunities; Brazil.
