Abstract
SILVA, Daniel Afonso da. The Bahia of Cipriano Barata and Brazil: in the end of D. Pedro I’s first reign (1831). Anál. Social [online]. 2016, n.218, pp.146-168. ISSN 0003-2573.
On April 13, 1831, a great popular uprising took place in the capital of Bahia. Its goal was to avenge the murder of a Brazilian individual by a Portuguese, a few days after the abdication of King Pedro I. This explains the acute tension between the expressions “being Portuguese” and “being Brazilian” in Bahia and Brazil during the first reign (1822-1831). The presente article relates the murder incident to the general formation and affirmation process of Brazilian national identity in the first moments of the Brazilian empire.
