Abstract

SERAFINO, Irene. Community theater in Portugal: a sociological analysis based on the case study of the association Pele_Espaço de Contacto Social e Cultural. Anál. Social [online]. 2022, n.245, pp.656-675.  Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 0003-2573.  https://doi.org/10.31447/as00032573.2022245.0.

After a diachronic analysis of the theatrical experiences in which community theatre can be inserted, a reflection on community artistic practices is proposed. In the framework of Pierre Bourdieu’s studies and his concept of social art and from the analysis of the Portuguese association Pele_Epaço de Contacto Social e Cultural, community theatre is though as a social phenomenon. An experience of Portuguese community theatre is presented. It is inserted among theatrical methodologies that, on the one hand, seek a critical approach to art and, on the other hand, place themselves in dialogue with social contexts, with participatory, pedagogical, educational and political goals. Based on a theoretical-practical work, the characteristics of contemporary community theatre are presented in the Portuguese context.

Keywords : community theatre; social art; Portugal; case study.
