Abstract

CARVALHO, Nuno Siqueira; MARTINS, Victor M.C.  and  ZACARIAS, Teresa V.. Profitability and competitiveness of viticultural farming systems in Portugal . Ciência Téc. Vitiv. [online]. 2001, vol.16, n.1, pp.1-21. ISSN 0254-0223.

The current study, shows some of the main results concerning the economic situation and competitiveness of viticultural farming systems in Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Beira Litoral, and Ribatejo e Oeste, regions. For these regions representative farming systems have been analysed using average farm accounts and data from constant samples of farms included on the portuguese Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), during the 1990-1996 period. Farming systems were classified and charaterized according to differents size classes of vineyard area and a minimal share of the viticultural output (30% of the Agricultural Total Output); several programming models were formulated and adapted to the structural, technical and economic average conditions of these farming systems. Overall, results of optimum solutions for planning models suggest a good level of competitiveness for these farming systems and the advantages of agricultural policies providing incentives to investment and marketing strengthening future competitiveness of viticultural sector.
