Abstract

CATARINO, Sofia; PINTO, Daniela  and  CURVELO-GARCIA, A.S.. Validation and comparison of analytical methods by flame atomic absorption spectrometry for determination of copper and iron in wines and brandies. Ciência Téc. Vitiv. [online]. 2003, vol.18, n.2, pp.65-76. ISSN 0254-0223.

The knowlegde of copper and iron contents in wines and brandies is important because these metals may involve haze formation during their storage. This paper presents the determination of total contents of the two metals in these beverages, by flame atomic spectrometry. The methods described by portuguese normas, were validated and its analytical characteristics were verified. Their apliccation for determination of some wines and brandies with low contents, may present some dificulties. The method of standard additions, widely practised in these situations, was also studied, and the precision of the two methods was compared. Because it is an extrapolation method, is thus less precise than the interpolation methods. We also presents the results of the participation in an interlaboratory assay.

Keywords : copper; iron; wine; brandy; analytical methods; flame atomic absorption spectrometry.
