Abstract

CUNHA, J. et al. Carpometric Measurements of seeds in the identification of wild ancestors of Vitis Vinifera L.. Ciência Téc. Vitiv. [online]. 2007, vol.22, n.2, pp.29-34. ISSN 0254-0223.

To discriminate between Vitis vinifera ssp. vinifera and Vitis vinifera ssp. sylvestris plants the length and diameter of seeds were analyzed. Sixty one Portuguese cultivated varieties, ten international varieties and 10 female plants from 3 populations of ssp sylvestris werecharacterized. The ratio diameter/length was found to be a god discriminatory parameter. Seeds can be considered belonging to a cultivated variety whenthe ratio is less than 0,65 and to a ssp sylvestris plant when ratio is more than 0,75. This is a non destructive discriminator that can be usefulin the study of seeds from archeological sites. It was found that three of the Portuguese varieties studied (Ferral, Olho de Lebre, and Uva Rei) present a diameter/length ratio between0,65 - 0,75 suggesting they can be related to the ssp sylvestris. These findings justify the inclusion of the seed diameter as a passport record to be included in the descriptor code of OIV for Vitis varietiesand species.

Keywords : Seeds; width/length; Vitis vinifera ssp vinifera; Vitis vinifera ssp sylvestris.
