ANTUNES, Gonçalo. Epidemics and the geography of death: cities and housing. Finisterra [online]. 2020, n.115, pp.127-132.  Epub 31-Dez-2020. ISSN 0430-5027.  https://doi.org/10.18055/finis20372.

Epidemics have always been part of the history of cities. The present paper intends to analyse, in an exploratory and essayistic way, the relationship between epidemic outbreaks and cities, from a historical-geographical approach, which highlights how urban spaces have always been places of fragility regarding the spread of infectious diseases. From a contemporary perspective, we analyse the Portuguese experience of epidemic outbreaks and how it is possible to trace the geography of death, depending on economic, spatial, and housing structures. In the end, we look at COVID-19, its geography, and the consequences for Portuguese contemporary cities.

Palavras-chave : COVID-19; epidemics; pandemic diseases; cities; housing.
