Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Ricardo Devides. Timor-Leste in the post-pandemic: geographical contributions to life and the economy. Finisterra [online]. 2020, n.115, pp.255-260.  Epub Dec 31, 2020. ISSN 0430-5027.  https://doi.org/10.18055/finis20330.

This article aims to discuss the future of Timor-Leste in post-pandemic times in the light of geographical contributions to think about the balance of economic development and the preservation of life. Marked by socio-spatial vulnerabilities, high external dependence and a low diversified economy, with 24 recovered Covid-19 cases, Timor needs to build an integrated and participative territorial condition, ,which considers infrastructural and technical improvements to strengthen local economic sectors, such as coffee, tourism and industry. By diversifying the economy, it can reduce its dependence on the oil sector and by strengthening governance, it reinforces its regional role. Also, building solidarity networks and promoting sustainable alternative economies are key steps for overcoming crises such as the current new coronavirus collapse. Geography, for thinking economy and life in unity, can indicate ways for Timor to develop real possibilities to face not only new pandemics but also new colonialisms.

Keywords : Timor-Leste; post-pandemics; economy; health; territory.
