Abstract

BARROS, Anabela Leal de. The contribution of a Manuscript of D. Francisco de Portugal to the Description of the Portuguesein the Eighteenth Century. Diacrítica [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.1, pp.36-63. ISSN 0807-8967.

In 1743, Manuel Pereira da Costa translated to Portuguese Histoire romaine par demandes et par reponses, attributed to the Abbe Morvan de Bellegarde. The Portuguese translation, Historia Romana por perguntas e respostas, desde a fundação de Roma ate o presente (Roman History by questions and answers from the foundation of Rome to the present), or rather its Part 1 (not verified that it has published 2), motivated D. Francisco de Portugal to compose a list of “Repairs”, translated ineighteenth-century manuscript of the Public Library of Evora. As one of the mostnotable members of the Royal Academy of History, acknowledged possessing exten-sive philological knowledge, whose “literary works have always been respected asunique, both for the novelty of the idea as the subtlety of speech and purity ofstyle”, D. Francisco filled four folios with lexical, grammatical and pragmatic flaws or defects in the translation of the writer, and teacher of Latin, Manuel Pereira da Costa, the most disgusting to him as uncompromising purist, although he regardedit as excellent.

Keywords : History of the Portuguese Language; History of the lexicon; Linguistic historiography; Grammatical discourse analysis; lexical and grammatical change.
