This paper aims to contribute to the semantic characterization of utterance concessive constructions in contemporary European Portuguese (henceforth PEC), highlighting its specificity by contrasting them with content concessive constructions. Assuming the distinction between epistemic concessives and illocutionary concessives (cf. Latos 2009, a.o.), a new proposal for the semantic-pragmatic characterization of the former is put forward: it will be argued that epistemic concessive constructions are equivalent to the negation of a justification relation between the two connected propositions. Concerning the illocutionary concessive constructions, a more fine-grained sub-typology, requested by our empirical data, will be proposed: it involves a distinction between (i) illocutionary concessives that modify the speech act expressed in the main clause, expliciting background circumstances that typically might have prevented its performance, and (ii) illocutionary concessives whose discourse function is to add a speaker’s comment on the propostional content (or part of it) of the main clause.
