Resumen

VIEIRA, Maria de Fatima. European Portuguese and the position of clitic pronouns. Diacrítica [online]. 2012, vol.26, n.1, pp.300-330. ISSN 0807-8967.

The present investigation concerns about object clitic pronouns positioning in relation to single word verbs and compound ones, keeping its focus on the oral modality of popular European Portuguese, departing from a set of records collected at the end of the twentieth century. Variationist nature (WEINREICH, LABOV & HERZOG, 1968, LABOV, 1972, 1994) of the current research, which aims at providing information about the parameters of the clitic pronouns order (KLAVANS, 1985), determines linguistic and extra-linguistic variables that turn out to be relevant in contexts with single or compound verbs. For this purpose, pre-verbal (Não se faz) and post-verbal (Faz-se) occurrences, with single word verbs, as well as the variants pre-verbal complex (Não se pode fazer), intra-complex verbal (Pode-se fazer) and post-verbal complex (Pode fazer-se), in structures with more than one verbal form, have been observed. The study is supplied with European Portuguese data extracted from the corpus CORDIAL-SIN, which contains oral records produced by unschooled informants from several regions of Portugal, by the end of the twentieth century. With the assistance of the techno-computational program GOLDVARB-X, occurrences collected from the material have been sociolinguistically analysed. It's worth enhancing that the current work contributes to amplify the studies regarding object pronouns positioning, once it does not only confirm previous results (VIEIRA, 2002), but also aggregates further information respective to the usual pattern of popular European Portuguese, as it determines linguistic and extra-linguistic restrictions of the structures under analysis
